MADELEINE C. BROWN
FOUNDING LAWYER | CREATIVE COUNSEL
-
Madeleine advises clients in entertainment and digital and interactive media, with specialized expertise in copyright, cultural policy and creative and commercial disputes. She currently practices as part of Stohn Hay Cafazzo Heim Finlay LLP.
Madeleine’s practice spans the music, videogame and film industries as well as other arts and media sectors. She helps artists, developers, producers, rights-holders and collectives protect their interests and maximize the value of their creative works.
Prior to joining Stohn Hay Cafazzo Heim Finlay LLP, Madeleine led her own boutique firm (MCB Legal Studio) after practising with both a top-tier national firm and a respected litigation boutique. Her advocacy experience includes high-stakes mediations and negotiations, trials, appeals and other contested proceedings, at all levels of provincial and federal courts and various administrative tribunals.
Madeleine’s family on her father’s side is Stó:lō, whose traditional territory is the Fraser River Valley in British Columbia. She is committed to supporting Indigenous creators and communities, with a particular interest in the protection of Indigenous traditional knowledge and cultural expressions under intellectual property law.
Madeleine also regularly mentors Indigenous youth and proudly serves as a member of the Giiwedin Anang Council of Aboriginal Legal Services, a council composed of Indigenous community members that provides an alternative dispute resolution program for mediating child welfare, custody, and access disputes involving Indigenous families. A key objective of the Giiwedin Anang Council is to ensure that children’s relationships with their Indigenous culture, traditions, and history are respected, protected, and maintained.
In her downtime, Madeleine enjoys painting, video games and live music. Her python, Daisy, works part time as her office assistant.
